Wounded Warriors - Care for Our Veterans: Focus on Veterans Day Lecture at Morse Geriatric Center

Presentation Based Upon Work in Addressing Unique Needs of Vets at End-of-Life

West Palm Beach, FL (September 23, 2010) - Over 600,000 veterans will pass away annually from now until 2016, and more than 60,000 veterans in Florida at end-of-life annually are cared for in the community. Hospices and veterans facilities are now focused on improving care for veterans at the end of their lives, including identifying them and their military history, evaluating the impact of their years of service on their lives, and honoring them and their families appropriately prior to and upon their passing.

In commemoration of Veterans Day, Denise DiGiovanni-Segal, RN, BNS, Veteran Program Manager for VITAS Innovation Hospice Care, will present "Wounded Warriors," on Tuesday, November 9th at 10:30 am Morse Geriatric Center, 4847 Fred Gladstone Drive in West Palm Beach. The program is based upon the work of Deborah Glassman, a nurse practitioner at the VA in Bay Pines Florida who cared for veterans for over 25 years and wrote a book on their unique needs at end of life called "Dying Healed."

"Deborah developed this presentation as an in-service to help those taking care of veterans at end-of-life to be better able to understand their specific needs and issues," noted Ms. DiGiovanni-Segal. "I am honored to be the other person in this country to present the 'Wounded Warrior' presentation to the community."

With nearly 15 years in various Hospice clinical and management roles, at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, Ms. DiGiovanni-Segal her specific focus is on caring for veterans facing end-of- life. In 2008, she was the recipient of the Hands and Hearts Award from the Palm Beach Healthcare Foundation for her work with veteran patients and is co-chair of the South Florida Hospice Veteran Partnership and a 2010 Veteran Service Officer.

"Wounded Warrior" with Denise DiGiovanni-Segal, will be held Tuesday, November 9th at 10:30 am in the Auditorium of Morse Geriatric Center, on the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Seniors Campus, 4847 Fred Gladstone Drive (off Haverhill Road) in West Palm Beach. It is free and open to the public.
